More than two million people have switched energy this year alone and a third of switches in June were from larger to smaller suppliers.

Summer switching has reached a new high for June with over 360,000 moving supplier – a staggering 58% increase from June 2014.

In total over the first half of 2016, 2.3 million customers switched provider which is almost one million more than in the first six months of 2014.

The figures from Energy UK revealed that of all switches in June, a third (120,000) were from larger to small and mid-tier suppliers, while 43% were between the larger suppliers (156,000).

Overall, the net gain by small and mid-tier suppliers was nearly 69,000 (minus those who switched away) which represents 19% of all switches.

However it noted that the figure is down on the previous month, where small and mid-tier suppliers had a 27% net gain.

Lawrence Slade, chief executive of Energy UK, said: “It’s great to see more and more customers shopping around over the summer months before winter hits.

“Over two million people have already switched supplier in 2016 and they have taken advantage of the fantastic deals offered by more than 40 suppliers.

“Since June 2014 the cheapest tariffs have fallen by over £200. There are now around 50 deals under £900 on offer. The new Energy Switch Guarantee – launched by the industry last month – has made it even easier for customers to switch.”
