Waitrose launches its first ever meal deal. But how does it compare to other supermarkets?
Waitrose has finally joined its supermarket rivals by launching its first ever meal deal.
From 30 August, shoppers will be able to combine a main, snack and drink in stores for the price of £5. Sandwiches, sushi, salads, and wraps will all come under the ‘main’ bracket, while a wide range of fruit, snacks and drinks will complete the offer.
The John Lewis partner joins the likes of Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons in giving shoppers the chance to save their cash at lunchtime.
Jennifer Moscardini, Waitrose food-to-go buyer, said: “We’re really excited to be launching this meal deal within our food-to-go range. We know lots of our customers are heading into our shops to grab something for their lunch, so to be able to offer them a convenient, high-quality and great value meal deal is really important for us.”
Earlier this year, a study from Which? found Waitrose was among the top three supermarkets to shop in.
Its latest move might see a surge in the retailers’ lunchtime popularity, but how does the deal compare with its rival supermarkets? Your Money rounded up the cost of its competitors’ lunchtime deals.
How supermarket meal deals compare
Tesco
Regular price: £3.90
Clubcard holders: £3.40
Tesco’s ‘premium’ meal deal includes a Tesco’s Finest main (or a range of branded mains like YO! Sushi), snack and drink for £5 with a Clubcard (£5.50 without).
Sainsbury’s
Regular price: £3.50
Co-op
Regular price: £4
Co-op membership: £3.50
Morrisons
Regular price: £3.50
Amazon Fresh
Regular price: Between £3.50 and £5 depending on what main is picked alongside your snack and drink.
Asda
Asda goes against the grain of a standard main, snack and drink price. Shoppers can select three ‘food-to-go’ items and get the cheapest for free.
If you follow the traditional mix of main, snack and drink, expect to spend between £3 and £5.
