‘Will I be paid if I have to self-isolate after an overseas holiday?’

The government has announced that anyone entering or returning to the UK will have to self-isolate for 14 days. But will they be paid during quarantine?

From 8 June, you won’t be allowed to leave the place you’re staying for the first fortnight after returning to the UK from abroad, except in very limited circumstances.

With flights to some holiday destinations set to re-start later this month, many people will be tempted to head overseas after months stuck in the house.

But what happens when they come back if they can’t do their job from home?

In our latest coronavirus work and furlough Q&A with Kate Palmer, associate director of advisory at global employment law consultancy Peninsula, we find out the details, as well as what furloughed employees need to know about returning to work part-time and second jobs during redundancy.

Q) Will I be paid if I have to self-isolate after an overseas holiday?’

A) Employees who have to self-isolate in accordance with government guidance to prevent infection with coronavirus are entitled to receive statutory sick pay if they meet the eligibility requirements and so it is likely that this period of self-isolation will also qualify.

Employers may first wish to consider alternative ways of dealing with the requirement to self-isolate, including home working or annual leave which will ensure that full pay is maintained.

Q) How much notice will I receive to come back to work part-time?

A) No information has been given on this element of the flexible furlough scheme as yet. More details are expected on 12 June and notice required, if any, is likely to be set out in that guidance.

Q) I’m furloughed on 80% pay and am working out my redundancy notice period (12 weeks). Can I take another job to top up my salary without effecting my redundancy payment?

A) Employees who are on furlough are permitted to find a second job subject to their employer’s existing rules on obtaining other work. There is no indication in the guidance that this does not apply during a notice period that takes place during furlough, or that doing so will affect entitlement to a statutory redundancy payment.
