A fifth of drivers’ parents pay for driving lessons
A fifth of new drivers have all of their driving lessons paid for by the Bank of Mum and Dad, with some raking up bills of over £1,000.
Figures from Carfused.com show 20% of drivers had all of their lessons paid by their parents, totalling £561 for an average of 22 lessons. One in five took 51 lessons of more, adding up to a staggering £1,300 for lessons alone.
While some drivers opted to learn to drive with a parent or family member, 15% described the experience as ‘annoying’ or ‘scary’, with 10% saying their parent grabbed the wheel and 5% saying they nearly had an accident.
Some 24% of drivers reported their parents found the experience ‘nerve-wrecking’, and 15% reported being shouted at repeatedly.
The typical cost of learning to drive is £774, including an average of two theory tests totalling £46, and two practical tests totalling £124.
Nearly a quarter (24%) of drivers said their parents paid for their theory tests, while 27% said Mum and Dad also paid for their practical tests.
The average cost of a first car is £2,907, with one in five paying more than £5,000, and nearly a quarter (24%) had their parents buy their first car for them.
Some 15% of parents also extended their generosity to paying for motor insurance, at an average cost of £112, with one in 10 paying more than £251.
