Giles Hargreave has been ranked number one in a report by Tilney Bestinvest to select the top 100 equity fund managers in the UK.

The research rated UK fund managers on their performance versus the benchmark, their consistency, and their experience.

The firm’s findings placed small-cap investor Hargreave (pictured) from Hargreave Hale in the top spot. He has been working in the financial sector since 1969 and managed the Marlborough Special Situations fund for 16 years.

In second place was Martin Lau from First State Investments, who manages the First State Greater China Growth fund, among others, while in third place was BlackRock global resources manager Evy Hambro.

First State was the only firm to feature two managers in the top 10, with First State Stewart manager Angus Tulloch taking sixth position.

There was bad news for Neil Woodford, who failed to make the top 20, being placed at 23. However, his former Invesco Perpetual colleague Mark Barnett was at number 19, while former Schroders manager Julie Dean was at number 16.
