Lottery players lose 15 times more than they win
The majority of people lose fifteen times more money than they win over the course of a year when playing the lottery, research has revealed.
A poll of 1,729 UK adults by www.VoucherCodesPro.co.uk found that the average win was only £10 a year, the equivalent of matching three main balls on a Saturday draw once a year, whereas the average expenditure was £156 a year, or £13 a month.
According to the study, 61% of respondents have played the lottery at least once within the last year. The average person spent £3 a week, with one Euromillions ticket and one Lotto ticket being the most common combination.
However, most said they had only won £10 in the past year, with 92% saying they had won less than they had spent.
Despite the financial losses 62% claimed they played for the ‘hope’ of winning, 47% said that you ‘had to be in it to win it’, while a further 31% claimed to have ‘regular numbers’ and were scared of the consequences of ‘winning but not playing’ where their numbers came up but they hadn’t bought a ticket.
More than half (54%) believed they would actually win a large sum of money on the lottery one day.

This follows research earlier in the year revealing that a staggering 3.6 million people were relying on a lottery win to fund their retirement, despite the odds of winning the lottery being 14m to one.
