Payments into and out of the accounts of Nationwide customers were delayed yesterday.

Customers reported issues with both transferring funds and logging onto online banking to outage monitoring website DownDetector yesterday morning.

The issues meant some Nationwide customers couldn’t access their salary and settle their bills. But other services including direct debits, standing orders and Nationwide debit cards were working as normal.

The issue began at about 4:30am on Monday and impacted ‘faster payments’, which enable you to send up to £10,000 to another bank account within two hours.

Nationwide customers took to social media to complain about the glitch, with many pointing out that the building society seemed to be having regular technical issues.

One Twitter user Tweeted: “So there are payment delays at @AskNationwide again, I love Nationwide but this is getting a little boring now as it’s getting to be almost every month.”

Another Tweeted: “Nationwide, It’s payday… guess what you have a payment issue yet again. Beyond a joke now how many times this happens. Time for a new bank I think.”

A Nationwide spokesperson said: “There was a delay yesterday with faster payments as a result of an internal technical issue. No other services were affected. Queued payments have now been processed and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

“No member will be left out of pocket as a result of this issue and all associated Nationwide fees and charges will be automatically refunded. For any charges and fees incurred elsewhere, people should contact the society to discuss these, and any related to this issue will be refunded. Anyone with any specific concerns can talk to us in branch, on the telephone or online, where we will be able to advise and help.”

The building society suffered similar problems just before Christmas when customers were unable to transfer money in or out of their bank account.
