NatWest will close 43 bank branches in England and Scotland early next year in another blow to high street cash access.

The 43 branches are set to close between January and March 2023. Just one bank branch in Sandbach has been flagged for assessment.

It comes as the number of customers using mobile apps increased 38% in the three years to January 2022, while counter transactions fell 64% in the same period.

Overall, 91% of NatWest’s retail banking customer needs are met digitally.

Between August and October this year, 15 NatWest branches were closed and 21 were shut between May and July 2022.

Nearly 500 branches closed in 2022

According to LINK, a total of 483 bank branch closures have been announced during 2022, across brands including Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, Nationwide Building Society, HSBC, Barclays, RBS and Danske Bank.

As of 2022, there are 12,178 fewer free-to-use ATMs in operation compared with August 2018, with an average of 99 bank branch closures taking place each month since 2021.

Earlier this year, in an open letter to the Treasury, campaign group Which?, along with a coalition of organisations, charities, industry bodies and MPs, highlighted their concern about the decline in access to, and acceptance of cash in the UK.

A NatWest spokesperson, said: “As with many industries, most of our customers are shifting to mobile and online banking, because it’s faster and easier for people to manage their financial lives.

“We understand and recognise that digital solutions aren’t right for everyone or every situation, and that when we close branches we have to make sure that no one is left behind.

“We take our responsibility seriously to support the people who face challenges in moving online, so we are investing to provide them with support and alternatives that work for them.”

NatWest has a dedicated support line for customers who are over 60 which is open 8am to 8pm seven days a week with shorter waiting times. It has also partnered with the Post Office to provide face to face banking services.
