Thousands of Santander customers were unable to login to their accounts on Monday morning after the bank suffered technical issues.

The problems affected both online banking and the bank’s mobile app, with customers reporting being unable to log in and make payments. Some customers also said they were unable to make card payments or withdraw cash from ATMs.

Issues logged with outage tracker Down Detector peaked at about 6.14am with more than 1,070 problems reported.

In response to customers’ Tweets, SantanderUKHelp Tweeted: “We’re currently aware of a technical issue that is impacting some of our services this morning. Our technical teams are working hard to restore a full service and any updates will be posted to our website first.”

At 11.20, Santander’s service status page was showed online banking and mobile banking as both working as usual, but it said it was experiencing high volumes of calls to its call centres.

A Santander spokesperson said: “We’re very sorry for the inconvenience while we fixed the issues some customers experienced earlier this morning. Our services are now available as usual but there may be delays to some card payments showing on customers’ accounts.”

Santander experienced similar technical issues in May this year when customers were locked out of their accounts, unable to make card payments, and unable to withdraw cash from Santander ATMs over a weekend. After that outage it offered compensation to impacted customers.
