Current Inheritance Tax legislation has come under attack from a senior Labour politician.

Former cabinet minister Alan Milburn threw dons the gauntlet to Gordon Brown, claiming that the hugely unpopular death duty “certainly needs to be reformed”.

His suggestion added to the growing rift within Labour over the tax which is drawing millions of middle-income households into its net because of the Chancellor’s manipulation of the threshold at which it has to be paid.
