Two Premium Bonds holders have scooped the tax-free million-pound jackpot, helping them kick off the May bank holiday celebrations.

The first Premium Bonds millionaire is from Hampshire, with a holding of £45,000 in total.

The winning bond number – 514CV247038 – was only purchased in September 2022, an enviably short period of time to scoop the life-changing sum of money.

They become the 13th Premium Bonds jackpot winner from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

However, the second million-pound winner had a much smaller holding of £10,575, bought in July 2020. This holder is from Outer London and won with the bond number 401XE212038. They are the 11th winner from Outer London.

There were more than 5.8 million prizes ranging from £25 to £1m in May’s draw, with a total payout worth £453m. There were 123.6 billion bond numbers eligible for the draw, with the odds of any £1 bond number winning a prize at 21,000 to one.

For a number of holders with small sums in Premium Bonds, they’ve also won big, with one saver having just £25, which will see them celebrate a £100,000 win. Several also scooped the £100,000 prize with just £100 held in Premium Bonds.

Andrew Westhead, NS&I retail director, said: “Congratulations to our two new millionaires from Hampshire and Outer London. We’re glad that we can bring a smile to so many people each month with our tax-free prizes, ranging from £25 up to £1m.

“This year, we celebrate thirty years since ERNIE drew our first-ever millionaire. Each £1 bond has an equal chance of winning, so the more you save, the more chances you have to win a tax-free prize.”

Are you a May Premium Bonds winner?

The million-pound jackpot winners find out on the first working day of the month. However, for everyone else, you’ll need to wait until Thursday 2 May to find out if you’ve won by checking the NS&I website, the prize checker app, or asking ‘Alexa’.

To check on the NS&I website, you need your Premium Bonds holder’s number, while for the prize checker app, you’ll need your NS&I number or holder’s number. You can also check for any unclaimed prizes owed to you.

Premium Bonds prize winners receive notifications of their winnings if they have registered their contact details. However, there are instances where customers relocate or forget to update their contact details with NS&I. This can lead to unclaimed prizes, especially for those who opt to receive their prizes via cheque rather than bank transfer.

NS&I revealed that, in Hampshire, there are 63,780 prizes worth £2.1m that are yet to be claimed. In Outer London, there are 222,004 unclaimed prizes worth £7.7m.
