The American Express Shop Small campaign returns this December allowing cardmembers to earn up to £15 in statement credit. But this year’s offer has been scaled back from last Christmas.

Amex cardholders who spend £15 or more in a single transaction in-store at a participating Shop Small retailer will receive £5 statement credit.

The promotion, now in its 11th year, encourages people to shop at small, local and independent retailers. It runs from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 December 2023, tying in with Small Business Saturday on 2 December.

The deal can be used a maximum of three times – but once per participating small business location – meaning cardholders can earn up to £15 back on a minimum £45 spend.

Additional cardholders can also use this offer as long as they enrol. Amex confirmed with YourMoney.com that each cardholder can use the deal up to three times, rather than three ties in total across different cardmembers.

To take part, you need to enrol for the Shop Small Offer which can be done from today (17 November) through the Amex app or via your online account. You need to save the offer to your card before spending at the retailer to receive the statement credit.

See the Shop Small Map to find out which retailers are participating this year. Amex said hundreds of thousands of retailers are taking part, more than any other year. However, as in previous years, it’s only available for in-store transactions, not online.

Before making a special trip, see the full terms and conditions ahead of spending.

The statement credit should appear on your card account statement within 30 days from the date you made a qualifying purchase but may take up to 90 days from the offer end date.

Shop Small returns but is revised

Last year, cardmembers could earn up to £25 in statement credit as the offer allowed for up to five qualifying transactions with a minimum £15 spend each.

Further, the offer was available for a longer time period from 3-12 December.

Amex said the savings are entirely funded by itself, at no extra cost to small businesses, adding that it believes three redemptions of up to £15 back is a “compelling saving which cardmembers will value”.

Harry Mole, vice president at American Express, said: “Our research shows there is a strong desire among shoppers to support small businesses which sit at the heart of our local communities. We’re proud to champion them once again with our Shop Small campaign which offers cardmembers cashback on their festive and everyday shopping, while encouraging all-important footfall on the high street.

“Over this crucial shopping period, we invite our cardmembers to show their love for the places that make our villages, towns and cities so special.”
