Best of the British aisles: February’s freshest supermarket offers

Supermarkets might not be able to match the big promotions seen in January, but love is in the aisles with some huge Valentine's Day deals.

As well as deals to make 14 February less damaging for the purse (and heart) strings, there are also price drops to ease the burden of having to feed and entertain kids on half term.

In last month’s round-up of the freshest offers, Aldi offered shoppers the chance to win four years’ worth of groceries worth £20,000 on the house, while Morrisons extended its Price Match of Lidl and Aldi.

Iceland also launched what it called its biggest ever deal by slapping a £1 price tag on 1,000 products.

While the mass price reductions are limited to a couple of supermarkets in February, there are still bargains to be had.

Dan Evans, the deals expert at Hotukdeals, said: “In general, January tends to be a better month than February for supermarket discounts, as retailers clear stock from Christmas and offer deals aimed at people taking up New Year’s resolutions (e.g., alcohol-free drinks, ‘healthy’ food, etc.).

“However, we can, of course, expect deals around Valentine’s Day – for example, the Morrisons deal that will run from 10-15th February. All supermarkets will run some kind of promotions around Valentine’s-related items, such as chocolate and romantic meal offers.”

Evans added: “On top of that, February also includes school half-term holidays in some regions of the UK, and supermarkets usually stock up on family-friendly items such as snacks and ready meals.

“We may also see promos related to Pancake Day and even some early Easter deals – which seems crazy, but such deals are trending earlier as supermarkets look to get ahead.”

As always, YourMoney.com has rounded up the special offers and discounts to keep an eye out for this month.

That’s Asda Price

Asda announced a return of one of its most iconic discounts for February, with the prices of over 4,000 products falling by an average of 25%.

‘Rollback’ savings will be applied across every food category in every UK store.

The offer will also extend to its smaller Asda Express stores as part of its new lower ‘Asda Price’ commitment.

It has also confirmed it will be slashing the price of “thousands” more products at “regular intervals” throughout the year.

Allan Leighton, Asda’s executive chair, said: “We’re lowering prices throughout our stores and online to make Asda the cheapest traditional supermarket and, in the process, returning to what makes Asda special – delivering unbeatable value to the customers and communities who count on us.”

Like all retailers in February, there is an offer aimed at couples wanting to eat a range of classic dishes at home for a reasonable price.

You don’t need to show a marriage certificate to bag the meal deal, which includes a starter, main, two sides and a dessert plus one drink for £11.97.

It could work out as a saving for you and your Valentine or ‘Palentine’ of up to £12.86 compared to if you purchased the dishes separately.

The classic starters include a Bistro Prawn Cocktail, Goats Cheese and Caramelised Onion Tarts, and Crispy Mac and Cheese Bites.

Mains include a Sirloin with Smoked Garlic & Pink Peppercorn Heart Butter Pellet and Bistro Mushroom Stroganoff Pies as one of the vegan options.

Desserts range from the romantic Bistro Vanilla Panna Cotta Hearts with Heritage Raspberry & Prosecco Jelly to the more traditional Bistro Melt in the Middle Belgian Chocolate Pudding.

The deal is open for all shoppers, no matter what their relationship status is, on 6-16 February, subject to availability.

Heart-shaped offers

As a more budget-friendly alternative, Aldi – the cheapest supermarket of 2024 – has a Valentine’s Day deal for just £2.99 per person.

On 10-16 February, there are three meal deal options, with standard, premium and vegan alternatives to choose from.

The standard option has a main including a spicy pepperoni or semi-dried tomatoes and mozzarella heart-shaped pizza with pink mini heart pancakes.

Its premium offer for £7.47 has tempura prawns for starters and a heart-shaped lobster pasta for mains, whereas the vegan choice has a main of tomato and basil arancini with a caramelised heart sponge pudding, which is also £7.47.

If you want a tipple with your meal, Aldi’s Prosecco Spumante DOC is reduced to £4.75 for the same time period.

Away from Valentine’s Day, Marks and Spencer is increasing its Bigger Pack, Better Value range for shoppers to over 90 more products.

New additions to the range are Large Mozzarella & Tomato Pizza (465g) for £3.75, Select Farms Mixed Peppers (750g) for £2.50 and two Garlic Baguettes (420g) for £2.25.

The retailer has also introduced a Family Stir Fry meal of large portions of noodles, sauce and vegetables for £6. The retailer said this is designed to feed a household of four.

It is also cutting the prices on its childrenswear line by up to a fifth on over 100 items.

Free coffee comeback

Waitrose reintroduced its free hot drinks offer for customers, and you don’t need to fill up your shopping basket to claim it.

Now, My Waitrose members can claim a free tea or coffee on any self-serve coffee machine in a Waitrose or Little Waitrose store.

Signing up to the My Waitrose scheme is free and you just need to scan your allocated barcode on your smartphone with the app, or the barcode on your physical loyalty scheme card.

While you don’t need to purchase any goods to claim your free Nero cappuccino or latte, you will need your own reusable cup.
