As the sun dares to make a prolonged appearance, retailers have turned to BBQ and fruit and veg reductions in the latest batch of supermarket offers this month.

With May boasting a double bank holiday, retailers introduced fresh cocktails in a tin and other summery offers, as covered by YourMoney.com in last month’s Best of British aisles round-up.

But, as we look ahead to June’s sweep of the best deals, the budget retailers have come out on top at the checkout.

Aldi

We are starting with Aldi, which is celebrating outdoor dining being back on the agenda by stepping up to introduce some tasty savings for national BBQ Week – which, of course, starts on 3 June.

Its BBQ essentials range does not have an item over £5 and includes the following:

  • New Pork Kebabs (£2.69, 320g)
  • New Marinated Pork Belly Slices (£3.29, 400g)
  • New Salmon Burgers (£2.69, 196g)
  • Specially Selected British Wagyu Beef Burgers (£3.49, 340g)
  • Rump Steaks with Flavoured Butters (£4.99, 400g)
  • Chilli & Cheese Hot Dogs (£3.49, 600g)
  • Specially Selected Brioche Hot Dog Rolls (£1.39, 6 pack)
  • Chilli Halloumi Kebabs (£3.49, 225g)

More meaty deals at the budget retailer come in the shape of Father’s Day, where ‘The Godfather Steak’ for £9.99 makes a return to shelves.

It is a ‘hulking’ 28oz of British rump steak and is available from 13 June. The Father’s Day range also has a cheaper alternative in the form of 600g of Teriyaki beef kebabs, which cost £5.49.

Aldi also lowered the prices of over 45 fruit and veg items, with markdowns equating to an average of 11%.

This varied from 10p price drops on a pack of 500g courgettes, 20p off a single beef tomato (now priced at 59p), and chestnut button mushrooms falling by 20p to now cost 99p.

Lidl

Aldi’s rival German retailer introduced a Lidl Plus loyalty scheme in the middle of May. The app-only scheme provides discounts for members and weekly coupons to spend on items suggested to you based on your shopping habits.

The main perk is the 10% coupon you’ll get if you spend more than £250 in the month, but this offer only lasts until 30 June, so time is running out to begin the spending to qualify.

Also, if you spend £50 per month, you can enjoy a free croissant or whatever you choose from its bakery range.

Co-op

Meanwhile, moving back to the fruit and veg aisle, Co-op made cuts to over 50 products in that section, but just for shoppers with a membership.

These include cheaper options on:

  • Baby Potatoes with Seasoned Butter 360g £1 – members save 44% compared to the former standard retail price
  • Little Gem Lettuce (pack of two) £0.80 – members save over 33%
  • Irresistible Cherry Tomatoes 225g £1.85 – members save around 27%
  • Pink Lady Apples (pack of four) £2.25 – members save over 18%

During June, the retailer will also introduce more supermarket offers for members looking for cheaper fruit and vegetables for their basket through its ‘fresh three’ promotion.

This is where Co-op reduces the price of three fruit and veg lines every six weeks across UK stores.

And, from 19 June, that deal will only apply to those with a membership, as the supermarket looks to build the number of customers who are Co-op members.
