After a rainy start, the summer is in full flow and July’s supermarket offers are stacked with free meals for children off school and sweet treats while you're in the sun.
Once again, Aldi remained the cheapest supermarket in the UK for shoppers, despite its rivals’ loyalty card deals.
The budget retailer has caught Olympics fever too and is giving you the chance to win £100 in Aldi vouchers if you missed a gold medal won by Team GB.
If you were in the shop while a gold medal was won, you can send a photo of your receipt to aldicompetitions@citypress.co.uk and Aldi will send you the vouchers. However, this is only for the first 10 eligible (and lucky) entrants.
The supermarket has confirmed the time shown on the receipt needs to be during the same minute that Team GB won a gold medal.
Aldi has also launched a new Asian-inspired ‘fakeaway’ selection, which has rice starting from just 75p.
The selection includes:
- Thai Pork Loin Steaks – £2.99
- Ready to Wok Rice Noodles – 85p
- Spring Roll Meal Kit – £2.49
- Chinese Inspired Rice (Satay, Black Bean and Sweet & Sour flavours) – 75p
Tesco’s strawberries and free meals for kids
Meanwhile, Tesco is making the most of a surplus crop of strawberries by slashing the price of the summer fruit if you have a Clubcard.
A 400g punnet, which usually costs £2.50, is £1.90 with the loyalty scheme card, and a kilo comes to £4.50.
The retail giant is also running its Kids Eat Free campaign again, but only for Clubcard holders, across all its cafés during the school summer holidays.
You can have one free Kids Hot Meal Deal, a Kids Breakfast or Kids Pick ‘n’ Mix lunch deal with each item bought by an adult from as little as 60p when showing a Tesco Clubcard or Clubcard App at the till.
Breakfast options include a ‘little’ avocado on toast, blueberry pancakes and little crumpets with jam.
The Kids Pick ‘n’ Mix lunch deal comprises a sandwich, a piece of fruit, two snacks and a drink. Or you can choose a main, two sides and a drink, with choices ranging from tomato pasta to classic fish fingers and chips.
If you fancy lunchtime in the sunshine, you might be pleased to know Tesco has added Magnum ice creams as a snack option to its meal deal offers for the summer.
This is a move echoed by Sainsbury’s, which has bolstered its snack section with a range of ice creams including Solero, Magnum, Calippo and Feast, to name a few.
Free crumpets and cereal
Morrisons is following suit on the breakfast freebies and is offering free bowls of cereal in its in-store cafés.
Until 4 August, if you ask for a “Kellogg’s Breakfast”, you will be able to enjoy a portion of Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies or Coco Pops.
It is running this scheme alongside its free meals for adults, where customers can “ask for Ellen” or “ask for Henry”.
If you ask for Ellen at one of Morrisons’ 397 cafés, it will give you a free toasted Warburtons crumpet with a variety of toppings including jam, chocolate spread and honey. This deal, in honour of the Warburtons founder, lasts until the first 100,000 are sold and begins on 5 August.
Morrisons will also continue its own Kids Eat Free promotion seven days per week for any child under the age of 16. They can claim a free kids meal when purchasing an adult meal that costs over £5 from The Breakfast, The Chippy or The Classics menu.
