The telecoms giant denied having issues with its email service this morning (Tuesday), despite reports to the contrary.

According to reports on the Downdetector website, the disruption began shortly after 12pm today. More than 4,000 BT customers registered their issues on the website, with the majority reporting being unable to log in to BT email services. A smaller number described problems with their broadband connection.

Users trying to access their BT email website reported finding a message saying: “This site can’t be reached. Check if there is a typo in email.bt.com. If spelling is correct, try running windows network diagnostics.”

BT offers three email options for customers. Standard email was available to customers who took BT Broadband and registered for the email service before 26 October 2022. It allows customers to register up to 11 email addresses.

Premium email is a lot like Standard email but costs £7.50 per month. It enables customers who have left BT broadband to continue using its email service. BT Basic email is free but you only get one email address and the only way to access it is via BT.com – you can’t use this email with an email client.

Customers also took to X.com to complain about the outage, with many saying it was difficult to contact BT to discuss their email or broadband issue.

One X user wrote: “@bt_uk why can you not speak to anyone regarding connection? I’m trying to work from home with no internet and can’t speak to anyone about it.”

Another posted: “BT have you got issues again with email – getting same error as a few days ago?”

But BT said services were working normally. It sent a statement to YourMoney.com that said: “There was no outage this morning as reported.”

The reports of problems with BT email and broadband came just a day after rival Virgin Media O2 suffered a major outage that left thousands of customers unable to access the internet.

More than 10,000 Virgin Media customers reported that their broadband was not working on Monday morning, with issues beginning just after 10am.

Thousands of Virgin Media customers will face price hikes of up to 7.5% from April. Others who have taken contracts out since 9 January will see their bills go up by £3.50 per month.
