HMRC brings in £22m extra tax from super-rich
The ‘super-wealthy’ paid 10% more tax last year as a result of HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) high net-worth unit which netted the Exchequer an additional £220m.
According to The Telegraph, the unit recovered 10% more than in 2011, when it collected £200m from the country’s 5,800 wealthiest people. Each of them has assets worth more than £20m.
The total raised by the unit, which was set up in 2009, now stands at more than £500m.
It was set up to stamp out legal but aggressive tax avoidance and employs about 380 staff in eight different offices across the UK. HMRC was left out of government asuterity budget cuts by the Chancellor.
