Over two million train tickets have gone on on sale for up to half the price, as part of an annual Government discount.

Until 20 January, passengers can bag cheaper travel for journeys across the UK between 17 January and 31 March.

The sale applies to off-peak and advanced tickets, but they are limited, so travellers have been urged to act and not wait until the end of the sale to secure their ticket.

It means you can travel from Euston to Liverpool for just £7 or from Nottingham to Manchester for £9.20.

Other half-price deals include a train to Carlisle from Newcastle, which will cost £6 during the sale period.

Last year, passengers saved almost £6m with discounts, and yet more savings are expected to be going back into customers’ pockets this year, with fewer train strikes planned than there were in January and February last year.

Every train company in Britain will offer cheaper tickets apart from Merseyrail and Hull Trains.

‘Biggest ever rail sale’

Heidi Alexander, Secretary of State, said: “I’m launching the biggest ever rail sale so more passengers can get big discounts on train tickets to visit destinations across the country.

“Whether you’re planning a getaway or wanting to visit friends or family, this sale offers huge reductions on all sorts of journeys.”

Natasha Grice, director at the independent watchdog Transport Focus, said: “Discounted fares are great news for passengers and will tempt many more to give trains a go. Our research consistently shows that value for money is one of the key things affecting rail passenger satisfaction.

“To help build trust in the railway, it will also be important that people attracted by this offer have a great experience on their journeys. Reliability and convenience are just as important as price in keeping transport users coming back.”

Here is a pick of the journeys offering discounted tickets.
