British Gas is offering half-price electricity on Christmas Day through its PeakSave scheme.

The discount is available to new and existing PeakSave customers, with savings showing as a credit on customers’ energy bills.

British Gas also announced that its scheme offering half-price electricity between 11am and 4pm on Sundays – PeakSave Sundays – will now run into next year.

PeakSave Sundays was introduced in June 2023 and extended in October 2023. It will run on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, which are both Sundays this year.

There is no obligation to change the time of your normal activities on Christmas Day or Sundays, but households can save money by doing more energy intensive tasks between 11am and 4pm.

PeakSave is available to all British Gas customers with a smart meter that sign up to half-hourly reads. To benefit from half-price electricity on Christmas Day, customers should sign up on or before 17 December.

Typically, there is a greater amount of renewables available in the UK’s energy system on a Sunday because of lower demand from business and industry, which reduces the requirement for energy generated by fossil fuels.

British Gas said that more than 425,000 customers taking part in PeakSave Sundays have been paid £2.5m so far for moving their activities to non-peak times and they have also contributed to a greener grid with almost 60 tonnes of Carbon emissions saved.

PeakSave Winter plans

British Gas is also offering customers PeakSave Winter by taking part in the ESO Demand Flexibility Service, where customers are rewarded for using less energy during peak periods. The first event of this winter was held on Wednesday and the second is from 4.30pm to 6pm today.

Catherine O’Kelly, managing director of British Gas Energy, said: “The coming months will bring both colder weather and all of the excitement and fun of the festive season. We know many people will be spending more time at home during this period, particularly on Christmas Day, and we wanted to give a little something back to our customers helping them to save on their energy bills while also contributing to a greener grid.

“The results from the scheme so far have been really positive and show that half-price electricity on Sundays is helping our customers to save money, while also shifting usage away from peak times. We expect the benefit of these savings to increase through the winter, as home energy usage goes up, and we hope to welcome even more customers to the PeakSave scheme to take advantage of the savings.”
