Drivers hoping to avoid a nasty surprise when filling up their car should head to a Morrisons petrol station, according to a motoring service.

The retailer is the cheapest petrol station in the UK, charging an average of 136.9p for petrol and 145.5p for diesel. At the other end of the scale is Shell, costing 142.6p per litre for petrol and 151.2p for diesel, according to RAC Foundation.

Filling a petrol-powered, 55-litre family car is therefore around £3.14 cheaper at Morrisons than at the energy giant.

However, across the UK, many supermarkets – unlike Morrisons – were overcharging drivers to fill up their tanks. The RAC said if supermarkets were taking “fairer, smaller margins”, motorists would be paying less.

This was despite an average drop in price of 6p per litre during December, meaning it costs £77.32 to fill a 55-litre tank – a fall of £3.40 in just a month.

Petrol prices dropping but supermarkets yet to follow suit

It means petrol prices are the lowest they’ve been since February 2022, before the Russian invasion of Ukraine which inflated the cost of fuel.

As further reductions are predicted by RAC Foundation, its director Steve Gooding has urged drivers to remain savvy when at the pump.

Gooding told PA news agency: “While this data shows that on average supermarket-branded fuel is most keenly priced, as might be expected, motorists would still be best advised to shop around because the data also shows that prices are influenced by local competition.”

He added: “The transparency this data provides will give both motorists and ministers a better picture of the petrol and diesel market. Topping this price league table should give retailers cause for concern.”
