The budget airline is expanding its free under-seat bag allowance amid an EU push for fairer baggage rules.

The proposed new EU regulations are aimed at ensuring passengers can carry more baggage without extra charges.

Currently, Ryanair allows travellers to bring a small “personal bag” – typically a handbag or small backpack – that fits under the seat in front.

The maximum size allowed is increasing from 40x25x20cm to 40x30x20cm, expanding the volume from 20 to 24 litres.

But despite the improvement, Ryanair still lags behind some of its competitors. EasyJet allows bags up to 45x36x20cm (32 litres), while Wizz Air already matches Ryanair’s new limit at 40x30x20cm.

Ryanair says the new allowance will be rolled out “over the coming weeks” as it updates its airport bag sizers. Once in place, the new size will exceed the EU’s recommended minimum dimensions.

Last week, EU lawmakers suggested that all passengers should be entitled to carry a free under-seat bag of at least 40x30x15cm, as well as one additional item weighing up to 7kg and measuring a total of 100cm, without extra fees.

If passed, these changes would mark a major shift in the low-cost airline model, where travellers often pay extra for cabin or hold luggage.

Earlier this week, Ryanair announced it would need to cancel about 170 flights due to a strike by French air traffic control.
