Ashwin Prasad, Tesco’s chief commercial officer, said the company has chosen more than 80 additional products to price match, including own-brand houmous and baby plum tomatoes.
The cost of Tesco houmous fell to 99p, iceberg lettuce to 64p, baby tomatoes to 78p and onions to 35p as the price match took effect.
Five years of matching
The Aldi Price Match was launched five years ago. Since then, the discount retailer has regularly taken the crown as Britain’s cheapest supermarket – at the start of this year, Aldi announced a prize to celebrate being named the country’s cheapest supermarket for the fourth year in a row.
Research from Which? last month into a basket of 79 items saw the brand retain this title for 18 months straight.
The total price of a shop at the discount retailer came in at £22.66 less than Morrisons, as well as being cheaper than Sainsbury’s by £22.54, and less expensive than Tesco by £16.64.

Sainsburys also price matches to Aldi.
In February, Tesco pulled 150 items from its Aldi price match, saying that it was changing its methodology so that items had to be available in more Aldi stores before they would be matched.
