This time the government has released 150,000 vouchers, the biggest batch since the scheme was officially unveiled last year.

Transport secretary Grant Shapps announced the news on Twitter. He Tweeted: “Today we’re releasing another 150,000 ‘Fix Your Bike’ vouchers, so those who need to travel, including pupils who have returned to school & their parents, can keep fit & healthy by cycling this spring.”

The fix your bike scheme was first launched in July but cyclists trying to obtain one of the first batch of vouchers faced technical issues and website error messages. A second batch of vouchers were released in November.

The scheme is open to anyone in England who has an unused cycle in need of a repair.

Due to overwhelming demand for cycle shops’ services during the pandemic, vouchers are being released in batches in order to help manage capacity across participating stores.

The Department for Transport said: “However, as there are a limited number of vouchers available, please consider the needs of others before applying for a voucher and do not delay making planned repairs outside of the scheme should your circumstances allow it.”

Cyclists who want to register for a voucher are directed from the government website to a website run by the Energy Saving Trust.

Vouchers can only be used with bike repairers or mechanics that are registered for the scheme in England. You should be able to book an appointment online or over the phone so you can avoid making unnecessary trips in person, but check this with your chosen repairer.

Only one voucher can be claimed per customer. A full list of terms and conditions and eligibility criteria is provided when you register.

The scheme aims to encourage more people in England to cycle as an alternative to using cars, particularly for work and essential journeys while social distancing measures are in place during the pandemic.
