The initiative from Transport for London (TfL) invites drivers in the capital city to send their vehicles to either be scrapped or donated to charity.
This gives Londoners the chance to shift their vehicles that do not comply with ULEZ standards.
The initiative, which ends at 11:59pm tomorrow, is open to all residents of London’s 32 boroughs, who can apply for up to £2,000 for scrapping their vehicle and a maximum of £1,000 for a motorcycle.
If your vehicle is wheelchair accessible, that rises to £10,000, while you can also receive £6,000 to utilise technology that retrofits the vehicle to make it compliant with ULEZ standards.
During your application, you’ll have to provide some ID, proof of your London address and valid motor insurance. TfL has confirmed you can upload the documents through photos from your phone, screenshots or scanned onto your device.
Requirements differ for business owners
Meanwhile, businesses that employ under 50 staff or micro business owners with under 10 employees can also decide whether to retrofit their vehicle or scrap their van or minibus in exchange for cash.
This ranges between £6,000 and £11,500, depending on the type of vehicle. If you have multiple vehicles (maximum of three), you need to separately apply for them to be retrofitted to be more eco-friendly, sent to the scrap heap or donated to charity.
If you’re a sole trader, you must operate within the 32 London boroughs or the City of London and the vehicle must also be connected to your business.
To be eligible, vans, like every vehicle, must be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) in the name of the business or sole trader and also insured for business use.
They also need to be registered with an eligible organisation for more than 12 calendar months before the start of the scheme (30 January 2023).
Vans will bag you £7,000 to be scrapped or donated and a minibus is £9,000, while donating a minibus and replacing it with an electric alternative will get you £11,500.
YourMoney.com understands that petrol cars that meet the ULEZ standards are generally those first registered in January 2005 (known as Euro 4 emission standard).
It’s a later date for diesel vehicles (Euro 6), which will need to have been first registered after September 2015.
So, if your vehicle was registered before those relevant dates, you may be eligible for the scrappage scheme.
Those drivers of vehicles that don’t meet the required standards are required to pay a daily fee of £12.50 to drive around every London borough. This is ever since the scheme to tackle air pollution expanded to the whole of the capital on 29 August.
This fee applies every hour of every day apart from on Christmas Day.
