This month, a total of 5,941,150 prizes were picked out of the 130,705,305,671 eligible bond numbers. That amounted to a total of £413,900,125 in cash awarded to Premium bond holders.
Other prizes of the monthly draw were handed to 79 winners who won £100,000, 157 who scooped £50,000 and 315 winners of £25,000.
While thousands of NS&I account holders have claimed their prize, there are around two-and-a-half million unknowing bond holders with cash waiting for them to collect, which stands at just under £1m.
Sefton winner with £175 holding
Every £1 of bonds has a 22,000 to one chance of winning a money prize, so the more you have, the better chance of starting the month with a welcome financial boost from NS&I.
For May’s draw, one saver in Sefton in Liverpool had a holding of just £175 but managed to bag £100,000. Their bond number was 25LE776205 and they began investing in November 2003.
However, the best place to scoop a cash prize in a draw is in Essex, according to research.
The Southern county has had over 10,000 fortunate residents who’ve won a cash prize, taking home more than £30.2m in the last year. If you live in Essex, there’s a 4% chance you’ll be a Premium Bonds winner, compared to 1.42% for the rest of the UK.
