The UK’s second largest investment platform, Interactive Investor, has revealed the most popular funds among its customers during the last tax year.

Investors stuck with seasoned fund managers during the 2018-19 tax year, according to the figures.

This may not be a surprise, given the uncertainty created by Brexit, combined with volatile stock markets during the fourth quarter of 2018.

Fundsmith Equity, managed by well-known name Terry Smith, was the most popular ISA fund on the Interactive Investor platform. Smith takes a concentrated approach and backs companies which dominate their industries and enjoy advantages that are difficult to replicate.

Another fund that targets high quality business models claimed second spot during the tax year: Lindsell Train Global Equity. This investment strategy is managed by Nick Train, Michael Lindsell and James Bullock.

The popularity of this approach was also evident with Train’s Finsbury Growth & Income appearing as the fourth most popular investment trust on the Interactive Investor platform during the same period.

Scottish Mortgage claimed top position as the most-bought investment trust during the tax year. Managed by Baillie Gifford’s James Anderson and Tom Slater, this listed fund buys growth companies across the world and is able to allocate a small portion of the portfolio to unlisted stocks.

Scottish Mortgage was followed by UK equity income pick, City of London, which has raised its dividend each year for over half a century. You can check out the top five investment trusts below:

“Amongst funds and investment trusts, it is those with a clear, well communicated strategy, combined with strong long-term performance, that time and again attract the greatest share of the pie,” explained Moira O’Neill, head of personal finance at Interactive Investor.

“This is equally the case when it comes to exchange traded products, where Vanguard accounts for four out of the top five. They make it look so easy, but with the same names appearing time and again, many would like to know the secret,” she added.

Interactive Investor is the UK’s second largest investment platform for consumers, with £19bn assets under administration and around 300,000 customers.
