Customers signed up to the scheme can get between 5% and 15% cashback on everyday spending on both credit and debit cards from retailers including Morrisons, Argos and Homebase.

The offer, which is available to both new and existing customers, can earn customers over £100 in cashback over a year, Halifax said.

The £5 monthly reward on the Halifax Reward Account will still be available, depending on eligibility, and customers switching their main current account to Halifax before the end of the year will receive £100.

Earlier this month, RBS and Natwest also introduced similar cashback programmes for customers.

New rules intended to make switching bank accounts a smoother process will officially come into force from Monday 16 September 2013.
