PayPal users suffered an outage this afternoon (21 November), meaning customers couldn’t access their accounts.

The problem hit account holders of the digital payments service all over the world from 10:53 UTC but was resolved within two hours.

PayPal noted on its website: “We are experiencing a system issue that may be affecting multiple products in our Production environment.”

It acknowledged an “elevated” number of errors but said: “Our technical teams are actively working towards resolving the issue.”

The outage disrupted the transferring and receiving of cash, with around 7,000 customers complaining to Downdector, which monitors the performance of payment platforms.

There was also no service for cryptocurrency services, Express Checkout and Venmo – the social media-influenced payment platform.

Some users were asked to “check your entries and try again” at the login page and many voiced their concern on X (formerly Twitter) about being hacked.

One user posted: “It’s a little worrying when PayPal is down all over the world and they won’t acknowledge it.”

Another wrote: “I already thought my PayPal [was] hacked or something but turns out it’s down for everyone.”

A third user added: “Having issues logging in and thus can’t send a message. Is the system down or have I been hacked??”

The digital payment service has 432 million customers worldwide and 56 million people in the UK have used it. PayPal is offered as a method of payment on hundreds of services and retailers including Trainline, eBay and ASOS.

As it stands, the payment service has not told its users the reason why the issues happened. YourMoney has contacted PayPal for a response but, at the time of writing, the firm had not replied.
