Love might not cost a thing, but those wishing to celebrate Valentine’s Day in the capital may find themselves forking out over the odds.

According to a study released by EliteSingles, a typical Valentine’s Day date consisting of dinner, a bottle of wine, cinema tickets, and a taxi ride home costs British couples an average of £79.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, London is by far the most expensive place to have a Valentine’s date – love-struck couples could end up paying £111 – over 28 per cent more than the national average.

Average Valentine’s Day cost by city:

  • London: £111
  • Manchester: £87
  • Bristol: £86
  • Glasgow: £84
  • Birmingham: £74
  • Newcastle: £70
  • Liverpool: £63
  • Plymouth: £60

The study also quizzed the public on typical Valentine’s spending habits, finding 61 per cent of single Britons were happy that their singledom meant they could avoid having to organise (and pay) for an evening out. 30 per cent of casual daters admitted they only celebrate Valentine’s Day grudgingly in order to appease their other half.
