The record Americna Express (Amex) 100,000 reward point sign-up bonus for new Platinum credit card members ends on Tuesday 9 January. For big spenders mulling over the plastic, it may be worth a look.

New sign-ups to the American Express Platinum Card can earn a record 100,000 membership reward points for applications made by 23:59 tomorrow, Tuesday 9 January 2024.

This is the biggest ever offer on the card, with the standard sign-up bonus offering 30,000 membership reward points when spending £4,000 in the first three months.

The Platinum credit card comes with a hefty £650 annual fee – the price was hiked in October from £575 and has a representative 704.6% APR variable. But for those who spend £10,000 in the first six months, you’ll earn 75,000 membership reward points. If you fail to reach this threshold, you won’t receive any of the 75,000 points, Amex confirmed.

Then by making a transaction – of any value – in month 15, card holders will receive an additional 25,000 points, taking the total to 100,000.

Membership reward points can be redeemed for vouchers that can be spent across a range of shopping, travel and lifestyle ‘partners’. As an example, 100,000 points can be exchanged for £500 in gift cards, or it’s enough for a return flight from London to New York, or it can be added as statement credit.

Gold card bonus and refer-a-friend scheme

Meanwhile, there is also boosted points offers on its other credit card too.

New cardmembers who apply for the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold Credit Card (free for first year, then £195, representative 88.8% APR variable) by end of 9 January 2024 will receive a welcome bonus of 25,000 membership rewards points when spending £3,000 in the first three months.

Gold cardmembers will also earn an additional 5,000 points on top of the initial 25,000 (30,000 in total) when they make a transaction of any amount during the 15th month of holding the card.

In total, this is 10,000 more points than the usual sign-up deal of 20,000 membership rewards points.

Further, until close of play on 9 January 2024, existing Amex cardholders can earn extra membership rewards points when referring a friend to the Platinum (18,000) or Gold cards (14,000 for every successful referral, maximum 90,000 a year). As you’d expect, there are spending thresholds to meet within certain time periods so check the terms carefully.

Meanwhile, those referred to the Platinum Card will earn 80,000 points when spending £10,000 in their first six months, while successful Gold Card members can earn 30,000 reward points when spending £3,000 in the first three months.
