Much like last month, the budget retailer has the lowest average cost for a basket of 69 popular groceries for May, scanning in an average total of £121.56, according to Which?’s study.
That’s £3.32 less than Lidl – more than last month’s £2.33 difference – and £36.57 cheaper than it would cost at Waitrose, which is a third more expensive at £158.13.
Of the biggest four supermarkets in the UK, Asda was the cheapest with the shopping list, coming to £137.91, closely followed by Tesco at £138.84.
Sainsbury’s and Morrisons’ equivalent shopping trolleys set shoppers back £142.33 and £144.36 to make up the third and fourth places in the ‘big four’.
The shop included in the study includes everyday essentials like baked beans, milk and cheese and comprises branded items like Dolmio sauce and own-branded items including fruit and vegetables.
