Logistics firm is latest victim in spate of cyber attacks

Logistics firm Peter Green Chilled says it is the latest company to suffer a cyber attack, illustrating the vulnerabilities smaller firms have to these attacks.

The Somerset-based firm delivers cold food to large supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Aldi. It said it is using “workarounds” to ensure orders are still delivered.

It is believed that hackers are demanding money to restore the systems after what is known as a ‘ransomware’ attack, a type of hack where cyber criminals encrypt a company’s systems and demand money to decode them.

While Peter Green Chilled is a smaller player in the logistics space, the implications of the attack are still large, with food producers telling the BBC that pallets of meat were sitting idle and likely to spoil.

The company confirmed that shipments are now continuing, but no orders had been processed on one day and only shipments prepared prior to the attack were sent out.

Spate of cyber attacks

The company is just one of a number of businesses affected by cyber attacks in recent months. M&S is still unable to process orders online after a hack and says some private customer data has been shared, while Co-op has also written to customers to say data has been accessed and its shelves have only just been restocked after an attack.

The Government’s Legal Aid Service has also been hacked and data has been breached.

Julius Cerniauskas, CEO of web intelligence expert Oxylabs, said criminal gangs are carrying out “increasingly brazen attacks”.

“This is yet another stark reminder that no organisation is immune to cyber threats,” he said of the legal aid attack.
