Some customers will pay up to £17.99 a month in the pricing shake-up.

The streaming service is putting up fees in the UK, US, and France. Customers can choose plans for different numbers of streams or ad-free viewing.

In the UK, the Basic plan is rising by £1 a month to £7.99 a month, which equates to an increase of £12 a year. This plan is no longer available to new customers. If you are currently on the Basic plan, you can remain on this plan until you change plans or cancel your account.

The Premium plan is rising by £2 a month to £17.99 a month, a £24 a year increase. The Premium plan allows you to watch unlimited advert-free movies, TV shows, and mobile games and to watch on four supported devices at a time, in Ultra HD. Extra member slots for people who don’t live with you can be added for £4.99 a month each.

The cost of both Standard plans is staying the same for now. The Standard with adverts plan was introduced in July 2023 and will stay at £4.99. The standard plan without adverts will remain at £10.99 a month.

The new prices came into effect for new customers on 18 October. Existing subscribers will be notified of changes to their prices by email in the next month.

Netflix last increased prices in May 2022. But in January this year it announced that it would be clamping down on password sharing. Although Netflix had always limited the service to one household and banned password sharing, the rule had never been strictly enforced. But since January, people sharing Netflix with people they don’t live with have had to pay £4.99 per person per month.

Alternative streaming services

Disney Plus

Disney Plus has more than 2,200 titles available including its back catalogue of classic Disney movies and complete Marvel and Star Wars franchises.

At the moment, Disney Plus costs £7.99 a month or £79.90 a year. But it’s introducing a new pricing structure from 1 November.

From then, there will be three options to choose from. Premium will cost £10.99 a month or £109.90 a year. Subscribers will be able to run up to four concurrent ad-free streams, with downloads on up to 10 devices.

Standard will cost £7.99 a month or £79.90 a year. Users can watch up to 1080p full HD video on two concurrent ad-free streams, with downloads on up to 10 devices. Standard with ads is cheaper at £4.99 a month.

From 1 November, all existing Disney Plus customers will automatically be moved to the Premium subscription package, priced at £10.99 per month or £109.90 per year, a £30 a year increase, unless they actively switch to another plan.

Apple TV+

Apple TV+ is included for three months when you purchase an Apple device and redeem the offer within 90 days. Alternatively, prices start from £6.99 a month.

If you are already an Apple user or planning to buy a new device, an Apple One subscription will allow you to bundle other popular services like Apple Music, Apple Arcade and iCloud+ together from £16.95 a month, saving £7 on the cost of subscribing to them individually

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video alone costs £5.99 a month, but for £8.99 a month or £95 a year you can sign up for Amazon Prime which includes Amazon Prime Video. If you’re a student, Prime Student is £4.49 a month.

With around 8,800 titles available, Amazon Prime offers a combination of blockbuster movies and its own original series. It offers some decent sports options too, including grand slam tennis, several Premier League games a season and Champions League fixtures from 2024.
