Peter TabernerIn a first for a UK retailer Tesco has announced that it is to pay the cost of VAT on a range of period pants to make them more affordable for customers.
The supermarket chain has said that it will reduce the price of its own brand F&F period pants by the 20% VAT charge. This will bring it in line with other period products which have been exempt from VAT for the past two years.
The price reduction will apply to all eight lines of F&F period pants, for example a pack of three pants will reduced from £18 to £14.40. While a single pack of period pants will see a fall in price down to £7.50 to £6. The decision from Tesco follows its decision to join the Say Pants to the Tax campaign.
The group that has been calling on the Government to reclassify period pants as a period product so they are not liable for VAT. Currently, period pants are considered to be garments. In 2017, Tesco were also the first retailer to cover the cost of VAT on nearly 100 own label and branded tampons and sanitary products.
