Lloyds Banking Group has announced it will close over 50 branches across the UK in the next nine months.

From July through to January 2025, 53 Lloyds Banking Group locations will shut their doors for the last time, including 22 Halifax, 21 Lloyds and 10 Bank of Scotland branches.

The decision is due to the ever-increasing number of customers who use its mobile banking service popularity and dwindling visitors to banks.

It confirmed 19 million people are now using the banking groups’ apps and the use of the 53 branches plummeted by an average of 51% (and up to 72%) in the last five years.

Once all previously announced closures are complete, Lloyds Banking Group will have 1,010 branches, including 495 Lloyds Bank, 392 Halifax and 123 Bank of Scotland locations.

Below is the complete list of Lloyds Banking Group closures, followed by the date they will shut:

As is standard when a banking group announces closures, LINK has recommended banking hubs to be placed in Keynsham, Wetherby, Whitby, Sherborne, Alnwick, Hull and South Elmsall.

Those hubs, operated by Post Office staff, offer basic banking services including withdrawals and deposits, and any other banking transactions.

Following the recommendations, the banking group will introduce 28 ‘community bankers’, which offer customers a place to get financial support, but no transactions can take place.

The community bankers will be added to cover Lloyds closures in Abingdon, Cardigan, Clitheroe, Ilminster, Malpas, Marlborough, Market Harborough, Newquay Chester Rd, Ross-on-Wye and Thame.

For Halifax customers, they will appear in Aberdare, Abergavenny, Aberystwyth, Andover, Biggleswade, Exmouth, Haverfordwest, Loughton, Midsomer Norton, Redhill, Saffron Walden and Sudbury.

Bank of Scotland customers can use the community banker services in Banff, Buckie, Ellon, Lanark Bloomgate, Lesmahagow and Strathaven.

The closures follow Lloyds’ move in January to ditch mobile banking vans, which offered basic transactions like withdrawals and deposits to take place.

But, the bank has sought to reassure customers of their options.

Alternatives will be near closed bank branches

A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson said: “Most of our customers now choose our mobile app or online banking as the main way to manage their money. Alongside online options, customers can also bank with us over the phone, at the Post Office, in a Banking Hub or by speaking to a community banker.”

“All of the branch locations announced for closure have alternative options for accessing cash nearby, such as a Post Office or free-to-use ATM. 28 new community bankers will be introduced, in addition to those already helping communities, to provide targeted banking support where a branch is closing.

“As with all proposed closures, these plans have been through LINK’s independent cash-access assessment, where a number of enhancements have been recommended. All closures have been made in line with FCA guidance.”

The bank offered some solace for employees at the branches which face closure, as it confirmed that “all colleagues who work at these branches will be offered a role at another branch or in another part of our business.”
