HSBC has apologised to UK customers for the outages with a message on its homepage about its online and mobile banking problems.
It said: “We’re really sorry if you’re impacted by the disruption to online and mobile banking right now, we’re working hard to fix it. If you’re not able to authorise an online card purchase via the app, you can opt for a one-time passcode via SMS.”
Website tracker Downdetector.co.uk noted that over 4,000 people reporting outages on HSBC services this morning, peaking at around 9am. Mobile banking services were worst affected.
According to the message displayed when customers sign into online banking, HSBC said the disruption was caused by an ‘internal system issue’ (click to expand image).

Black Friday fail
The outages are badly timed on Black Friday, when some financial services providers are already reporting a boost in transactions.
Nationwide said it had seen a 14% rise in transactions by 12 noon, as bargain hunters made the most of the sales.
HSBC posted on X (formerly twitter) earlier today that it was ‘working hard to restore mobile and online banking services, and the authorising of online card purchases via the app’.
The Bank added it would share updates on X.
