Sainsbury’s will cut prices on its most popular products, as part of a £780m investment, the supermarket announced.

The retailer has ramped up its Aldi Price Match campaign too, increasing the number of products to the same price as its budget rival to 550.

Shoppers who have a Nectar card could also reap the rewards of signing up, with the discount scheme available on over 6,000 items.

Customers who’ve signed up for the loyalty scheme can enjoy a week-long reduction in prices across a whole host of everyday essentials. A ‘half price payday deal’ discount will be slapped on a range of products from 24 – 30 January.

The supermarket introduced the offer to alleviate the strain as many face the extra wait for this month’s pay packet.

With the price drops, a 350g block of Cathedral City mature cheddar will cost £1.75, while a Muller Corner Crunch pack of six goes down to just £2.00.

Baby event added to host of discounts from the retailer

Cleaning products are also included in the offer, with a litre of Persil Liquid Non-Bio going down from £7.00 to just £3.50.

The supermarket follows Morrisons, Tesco and the cheapest supermarket of the year, Aldi, in making sweeping price changes to kick off 2024.

Sainsbury’s price drop coincides with its baby and toddler discount event – where Nectar cardholders can enjoy sizeable reductions on hundreds of products for babies and parents.

Many of its rivals have already had to lower the cost of baby formula after a review from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) revealed prices rose 25% in just two years.

As part of the event, a 12-pack of Pampers Sensitive Baby Wipes will cost £9.00 – down from £11.25. Also, a 38-pack of Essential Pampers Baby Dry Nappy Pants (size 4) will be halved in price, costing just £4.95.

Sainsbury’s drops prices as part of £780m investment

Simon Roberts, chief executive of Sainsbury’s, said: “We’ve been working hard to reduce costs across our business so that we can give more value back to our customers and help to bring down inflation.

“Our investment of £220m this financial year, and £780m over three years into lowering our prices means that customers can be confident whatever they are shopping for, they will find great value on the products they love at Sainsbury’s.”

Roberts added: “Sainsbury’s is committed to helping customers enjoy good food, whatever their budget. We have made further investments this month in lowering prices on own brand fresh family favourites to help customers stay healthy this winter, including fruit and veg staples like berries, prepared salads, sugarsnap peas and mangetout.”
