Lloyds Banking Group has announced the closure of 136 more bank branches, making it the second major provider to do so in a week.

There will be 61 closures of Lloyds Bank and Halifax branches, while 14 Bank of Scotland locations will also get the chop by March next year.

Customers were told in September last year that there would be shutters coming down on 55 branches from January to September 2025.

These further closures will reduce the number of places for Lloyds customers to have face-to-face discussions about their accounts six days per week to 386 in the UK. Halifax customers will be able to use 281 sites and there will be 90 Bank of Scotland spots left.

Lloyds said the branch closures are due to the millions of customers who opt for its online banking alternatives, as the number of customer transactions fell by up to 78% in some regions of the UK, with an average drop of 48%.

It comes in the same week that fellow high street bank NatWest announced a cull of 53 branches, which will take place between April and June this year.

Customers who wish to carry out regular transactions can use banking hubs operated by the Post Office between 9am and 5pm on weekdays.

There are also community banker services available, where you can discuss more complex banking issues on the allocated day that a Lloyds Banking Group firm is in the hub.

‘Over 20 million’ app customers

A Lloyds spokesperson said: “Over 20 million customers are using our apps for on-demand access to their money and customers have more choice and flexibility than ever for their day-to-day banking.

“Alongside our apps, customers can also use telephone banking, visit a community banker or use any Halifax, Lloyds or Bank of Scotland branch, giving access to many more branches.

“Customers can also do their everyday banking at over 11,000 branches of the Post Office or in a banking hub.”

Following the announcement, Susannah Streeter, head of money and markets at Hargreaves Lansdown, said: “Lloyds is swimming with a fast-moving tide by closing yet more banks across its network.

“It may have a focus on traditional lending, but the vast majority of customers no longer have any need to go in store for loans or mortgages with digital services dominating. Branches have fallen like dominoes as users have shifted online.”

Streeter added: “Crucially, there needs to be enough cashpoints to serve the local community. Under new FCA rules, banks and building societies must assess whether changes to local services, like closing branches or cash machines, leave local communities lacking ways to take out or pay in cash.

“Any residents, businesses or charities who believe their access to cash is sorely lacking in their areas can request a review. If LINK, the UK’s main ATM network, believes there is a hole in provision, additional cash services will need to be provided, either through a banking hub, post office or an ATM.”
